What virtual reading is
Instead of physically reading the whole ECU out of the vehicle, the tool identifies the ECU and
pulls the matching original from a database. You tune that copy and write it back. It saves a
long read, and on some ECUs a full physical read is slow or not supported at all, so it is a
genuinely useful thing to have.
The whole method depends on one condition: the original for that exact ECU has to already
exist on file.
What the message means
There is no original on record matching the identification the tool sent. It is not a fault
with your tool, your connection or the car. Nothing has been written and nothing is damaged.
It usually comes down to one of these:
- A new or uncommon ECU variant that has not been catalogued yet
- A software version that differs slightly from the ones on file
- An ECU that has already been modified, so the identification no longer matches an
original
- A replacement ECU from a different vehicle or market
What to do
- Take a full physical read of the ECU by whichever method that ECU supports, whether that is
OBD, bench or boot.
- Save it untouched. That file is the customer’s original and the only proof of what was
actually on the car.
- Open a ticket on the dealer portal and attach the read file and the log, with the ECU hardware
and software numbers and the vehicle details.
- Wait for the file to come back rather than proceeding on an unverified original.
The thing worth understanding about virtual reads
A virtual read does not give you the customer’s file. It gives you a database copy of what that
ECU should contain. If the car had been tuned before you touched it, that history is not in your
hands, and if the job later has to be put back to standard you are restoring a stock file rather
than what was genuinely on the vehicle. Take a physical read when the ECU allows it, and always
keep the original before anything is changed.
While you are working
A proper battery support unit on the vehicle, not a trickle charger, for the read as well as
the write. A read that fails partway is an inconvenience, but a flat support unit that got you
through the read and then gave up during the write is a recovery job.
