Many performance cars have a valve in the exhaust that opens under load or in a
sport mode and closes when you are cruising. It is how a car passes a drive by noise test
and still sounds like something when you want it to.

When an actuator fails it usually sticks closed, and the car is quiet and slightly
strangled. Replacing the actuator is the repair. The calibration side controls when the
valve opens.

Noise limits still apply. A valve locked open on a car used at unsociable hours is a
decision worth thinking about first.
