A direct-injection engine needs fuel at very high pressure, and the pump that provides
it is driven off the camshaft with its own control valve and pressure sensor. On the engines
this job covers – the older 2.0 TFSI on MED9, the Audi and Lamborghini V8 and V10, the Bentley
W12 – the standard pump runs out of capacity well before a Stage 2 or Stage 3 engine runs out
of appetite.
Why the pump alone is not enough
Fit an uprated pump and leave the calibration alone and the ECU carries on controlling it
as if it were the original. The pressure targets, the control valve timing and the sensor
scaling are all wrong for the new hardware, and the usual result is fuel pressure faults,
limp mode, or a pump that is working hard to deliver nothing extra.
What the calibration does
The ECU is told what pump it has. The pressure targets are raised to what the new pump can
deliver, the control valve strategy is matched to it, and the fuel pressure monitoring is
rescaled so the ECU stops seeing normal operation as a fault. Done properly, the extra fuel is
there when the tune asks for it and the pressure holds steady to the red line.
This is a component of a hardware build, not a standalone job. It goes with the pump, the
injectors where needed, and the calibration that uses them.
