A remap changes the calibration inside the ECU itself. That means fuelling, boost, timing, torque limits and the safety strategies around them can all be adjusted together, and adjusted to suit your specific vehicle.
A diesel tuning box sits outside the ECU and alters a signal going into it, usually fuel rail pressure. The ECU is still running its original calibration and is being fed a modified reading. That is a much blunter tool, and it is the same for every car the box is sold for.
Where a box does make sense
We do sell tuning modules for certain applications. The ones we supply are high end digital units we have run in our own dyno cell and seen results from. They suit customers who want something that can be unplugged, or vehicles where the software route is not practical.
Be careful with cheap boxes sold online. At best they do nothing measurable. At worst they push fuel pressure without the ECU understanding why, and that can cause running faults and expensive damage.
If you are not sure which route suits your vehicle, ring us and we will tell you straight.
