What it is and when it makes sense

The immobiliser stops the engine starting unless it recognises the key. It is an important security feature, but when an engine ECU fails or is swapped, the immobiliser can stop the car running even though nothing else is wrong, and the dealer answer is often a new, coded ECU.

On supported ECUs we can remove the immobiliser function from the engine ECU so a replacement or repaired unit will run. It is most often used for ECU swaps, engine conversions and competition cars.

Think carefully before removing it from a road car: it is a security feature, and your insurer will need to know.

Will my car still be secure?

The engine ECU will no longer check the key, so the car is less secure. If that matters, ask us about adding a separate immobiliser such as an Autowatch Ghost.

Do I need to tell my insurer?

Yes. It changes the car's security, so your insurer needs to know.

Do you need proof of ownership?

Yes, always. Bring the V5C logbook and photo ID. We will not remove an immobiliser without them.
