What it is and when it makes sense

Many diesel engines have small flaps in the inlet manifold that swirl the incoming air at low revs to help combustion. Over time the spindles wear and carbon builds up, and on some engines a flap or its screw can break off and be sucked into a cylinder, which can wreck the engine.

There are two ways to deal with it. We can remove the flaps completely and blank the holes, or lock them in the open position so they can no longer break off. Either way, the ECU is recalibrated so it stops expecting the flaps to move and no fault codes show.

If the manifold is badly coked up we can clean it at the same time, which is often what the car really needed.

Which engines have swirl flap problems?

They are best known on some BMW, Mercedes, VW Group, Fiat and Vauxhall diesels. Send us your registration and we will tell you whether yours has them and what we would do.

Will it make the car run worse?

In normal driving you should not notice a difference. The ECU is recalibrated to suit, so there are no warning lights.

Can you do it with a remap?

Yes. It is often done at the same time as a remap, so the car only comes in once.
