Alientech KESS3 Adds OBD and Bench Support for Scania Trucks

Alientech KESS3 upgrade 3.59 adds OBD and Bench access to Scania R and S Series Motorola EMS10 ECUs, covering DC13 and DC16 engines from 2019 on.

Alientech’s KESS3 upgrade 3.59 adds OBD and Bench access to the Motorola EMS10 ECU fitted to Scania’s R-Series and S-Series trucks, alongside the existing Boot mode. It is the first time this generation of Scania engine control unit has had both a diagnostic-port route and a bench route in the same release, giving dealers a choice of method depending on what each job needs.

Which ECUs

The update covers the Motorola EMS10 unit as fitted across Scania’s DC13 and DC16 engine families, with OBD and Bench protocols now live alongside the existing Boot support. The release is not marked as beta.

Vehicles this opens up

  • Scania R-Series trucks (2019 on)
  • Scania S-Series trucks (2019 on)
  • DC13 12.7 litre straight-six engine
  • DC16 16.4 litre V8 engine

What it means

For fleet operators and owner-drivers, this is about torque delivery low in the rev range and fuel burn over a shift, not a headline power number. A well-judged remap on a DC13 or DC16 can improve driveability when pulling away loaded and reduce the amount of gear-hunting on long hauls, which adds up over the kind of mileage these trucks cover.

For dealers, having OBD, Bench and Boot all available on the same ECU means the method can be matched to the vehicle in front of you – a quick OBD session where access allows, or Bench work where the truck’s history or ECU condition calls for it. That flexibility is what keeps turnaround times down on commercial vehicle work, where a truck sitting idle costs the operator money every hour it is off the road. It also means a job does not need to be turned away just because one route is blocked – if OBD access is not possible on a particular truck, Bench or Boot is there as a fallback rather than the vehicle going elsewhere.

Our tools now read and write the EMS10 unit across both engine families, and our file service covers Scania calibration work for dealers who do not run Alientech hardware themselves. Dealers running KESS3 can see the full specification on our Alientech tuning tools page, and fleet operators or workshops wanting to talk through a specific truck should get in touch.
