Autotuner has rolled out a new OBD Virtual Read and Write protocol for the Bosch MG1CS018 ECU, a TC298-based unit fitted across a spread of Ford and Lincoln EcoBoost models built between 2017 and 2022. Unlike a mail-in or bench unlock, this one runs entirely through the OBD port, so a tuning file can now be pulled and written back without the ECU ever leaving the car.
Which ECUs
The protocol targets the Bosch MG1CS018 specifically, running on the TC298 processor that Ford and Lincoln have used across several turbocharged EcoBoost platforms. The read and write pass takes around eight minutes and comes with full checksum correction, so the file that comes back is clean and ready to load straight away. Because it is OBD only, there is no need to strip trim or access the ECU physically – the whole job is done through the diagnostic port.
Cars this opens up
- Ford F-150 (2017) 2.7L EcoBoost
- Ford Ranger (2022) 3.0L V6 EcoBoost
- Ford Explorer (2021) 3.0L V6 EcoBoost, 3.0L V6 EcoBoost PHEV and 3.3L V6 PHEV
- Ford Edge (2019) 2.7L EcoBoost
- Ford Transit (2020) 3.5L V6 EcoBoost
- Lincoln Aviator (2020) 3.0L V6
What it means
For owners, it means a proper tuning option now exists for these EcoBoost engines without the ECU being sent away or pulled out of the car – the whole process happens through the OBD port in a single workshop visit. That matters as much for a daily-driven F-150 or Transit as it does for a performance-minded Explorer or Aviator, since none of them need to be off the road any longer than a normal remap appointment.
For dealers, an OBD-only protocol is the easiest kind to add to a book of work: no bench rig, no ECU removal, no waiting on a mail-in turnaround. It is a fast, repeatable read/write pass that slots straight into an existing workshop routine, and the checksum handling means less time double-checking files before they go back on the car.
Our tools now read and write Bosch MG1CS018 ECUs, and the file service covers this protocol from today. If you run one of the vehicles above, build your tuning file here. Garages can pull files through our dealer file service, and the hardware behind it is our AutoTuner tool.
