Alientech has released new BENCH and BOOT Unlock protocols for KESS3 covering the Bosch MD1CP017 ECU, fitted to Jaguar and Land Rover models with the 2.0 litre D165 and D200 mild hybrid diesel engine from 2021 onwards. The MD1CP017 has been a locked unit up to now, so this is a new way in for anyone running KESS3 on this generation of JLR diesel.
Which ECUs
The update covers the Bosch MD1CP017, as used across Jaguar and Land Rover’s 2.0 litre mild hybrid diesel engines, badged D165 and D200, built from 2021. Until this release the MD1CP017 was locked with no supported way in. The new protocol unlocks it in BOOT mode using the KESS3 Unlock Module, and once it is open the ECU can then be read and written in BENCH mode through its connector.

What it means
For owners, it means our file service now covers this generation of JLR mild hybrid diesel, where the locked ECU previously put it out of reach. If you drive one of the models above and have been quoted “no support” elsewhere, it is worth asking us again.
For dealers running KESS3, this is a bench job rather than a workaround. Unlock in BOOT mode with the Unlock Module, then read and write through the bench connector as normal once the ECU is open. No mail-in step and no soldering, just the standard bench setup most KESS3 users already have on the shelf. As with any new unlock protocol, take a full backup before the first write and keep it somewhere safe.
If you run KESS3 and pick up one of these cars, our file service can turn the file around once the ECU is unlocked and read out. Get in touch if you want to check a specific registration or VIN before you commit the bench time.
Owners looking at a performance upgrade on one of these models can see what a typical remap looks like through our tuning builder. Dealers wanting files written against the new protocol can use our file service, and anyone running or considering KESS3 can find out more on our Alientech tools page.
