New BETA OBD Protocol Opens Up Scania Series R & S EMS10 Tuning

Autotuner has a new BETA OBD protocol that reads and writes the Continental EMS10 ECU on Scania trucks - here is what it covers for dealers.

2 min readBy JF AutomotiveMaidstone, Kent

Autotuner has released a new OBD protocol for the Continental EMS10 engine control unit, as fitted to current Scania trucks. The protocol is still in BETA, so our tools now read and write the EMS10 over OBD using the AutoTuner 24V OBD cable, and dealers should treat it as an early-access protocol rather than a finished one.

Which ECUs

The update covers the Continental EMS10 (CEM1) unit. Access is OBD Normal Read only – there is no bench, boot or mail-in option for this ECU yet, and Autotuner is explicit that the protocol is in BETA while it is bedded in.

Vehicles this opens up

  • Scania Series R (2018 onwards): 16.4 litre DC16 V8
  • Scania Series S (2015 to 2018 onwards): 12.7 litre DC13, and 16.4 litre DC16 V8

Those are the exact ranges Autotuner has published. If you run a Scania outside these years or engines, send the registration or chassis details through and we will check coverage before quoting anything.

What it means

For fleet operators and owner-drivers, a truck remap is rarely about a headline power figure. What matters on the EMS10 is torque delivery low in the rev range, a calibration that supports steady fuel burn over long distances, and a file that suits sustained work rather than short bursts. That is the angle we will take with any EMS10 file, not a bhp number.

Because this is a BETA protocol, our file service will flag it as such on any quote for an EMS10 truck, and we would always recommend talking it through with us before committing a working vehicle to it. Early protocols can behave differently to a finished release, and a tool going wrong on an EMS10 unit is not a cheap mistake.

For dealers running Autotuner kit, the EMS10 is now reachable over OBD without the mail-in or bench workarounds the unit previously needed, which should mean a faster turnaround once the protocol settles down. We would still suggest some caution with early files until Autotuner moves it out of BETA.

If you run Scania trucks in this range, or you are a dealer wanting a file for one, get in touch and we will talk you through exactly where things stand on this protocol before you commit.
