BMW M and Alpina S58 ECU Access Now Live on KESS3 and Powergate

Alientech KESS3 and Powergate now access Bosch MG1CS049 ECUs on BMW M and Alpina S58 cars by OBD after a bench unlock, for 2021-on models only.

Alientech has opened up the Bosch MG1CS049 ECU fitted to the S58 3.0 litre bi-turbo engine, covering BMW M and Alpina models from 2021 onward. Access is via KESS3 and Powergate: an initial BENCH unlock and dedicated patch are needed first, after which read and write both go through the OBD port rather than requiring the car back on the bench every visit.

Cars this opens up

  • BMW M2 and M2 CS
  • BMW M3, M3 CS and M3 Competition
  • BMW M4, M4 CS, M4 CSL and M4 Competition
  • BMW X3 M and X4 M
  • Alpina B3 and B4

All of the above use the Bosch MG1CS049 control unit on the S58 engine, built from 2021 onward. That is the full list Alientech has published for this release – we have not added any models beyond what the manufacturer has confirmed support for, so if a particular year or variant is not listed above it is worth checking with us before booking a car in.

What it means

The bench step is a one-off. Once the initial unlock and patch are done on a car, later visits for that ECU can go through OBD instead, which is the part that saves time for a workshop that sees these models regularly. For dealers already set up on KESS3 or Powergate, that means one bench session per car rather than a full bench job every time it needs touching – a worthwhile saving on a platform where the bench work itself is fiddly and time-consuming to get right.

Our tools now read and write the Bosch MG1CS049 ECU covered here, so BMW M and Alpina S58 cars from 2021 on are on the list of what we can support through both our own workshop and our dealer file service. The S58 is a popular engine for tuning given how far it responds to a well-built file, and locking owners and dealers out of easy access to the ECU had been one of the more awkward gaps in current-generation BMW M coverage. This closes that gap for the specific models Bosch and Alientech have validated.

If you have one of these cars booked in, build a file through our tuning builder, or if you are a dealer send the job through our file service. See our Alientech tool page for the hardware side, or get in touch if you want to check a specific car against this list before it comes in.
