Autotuner Scania Motorola EMS S7 OBD Read in Beta: G, P and S Series

Autotuner adds a Beta OBD and bench protocol for Scania Motorola EMS S7 ECUs: G, P and S Series trucks. Details, vehicle list and what it means for...

2 min readBy JF AutomotiveMaidstone, Kent

Autotuner has released a new protocol for the Motorola EMS S7 engine ECU fitted to Scania trucks. It covers a normal OBD read through the truck’s diagnostic socket, and a bench option using a dedicated Scania bench cable. The release is marked Beta by Autotuner, who are asking workshops for feedback, so treat it with the care you would give any new protocol on expensive machinery.

Which ECUs

The protocol targets the Motorola EMS S7 ECU, which is built around an MPC563 microcontroller. Autotuner lists two modes for it: OBD Normal Read (NR) in Beta, and OBD on the bench with the Scania bench cable. No boot or datalog mode is listed for this ECU in the announcement.

Autotuner quotes a read time of 12 minutes 30 seconds and a write time of 7 minutes, with checksum correction supported. It needs the Autotuner 24V OBD cable and a 24V charger (a GYSFLASH 101.24 CNT is named) to keep voltage stable throughout. Stable supply matters on any truck ECU job, and it matters more on a Beta protocol.

Vehicles this opens up

All listed vehicles are Scania:

  • G Series (2005 onward): 11.7L DT 12 17 (HPI)
  • P Series (2007 onward): 8.9L DC 9 16, DC 9 17, DC 9 18 and DC 9 35 (XPI)
  • S Series (2015 onward): S 500

Only the engines above are named by the source, so check the exact engine code before quoting a job.

What it means

For fleet owners and operators, a Scania calibrated for better torque delivery low in the rev range can pull a load with fewer downshifts and less time spent at high revs, which is where fuel burn and driver fatigue add up. Any real-world gain depends on the truck, the load and the duty cycle, and it should be judged on fuel use and work rate rather than a headline power figure.

For dealers, the draw is turnaround. An OBD route avoids stripping the ECU out of the truck, and the bench option gives you a second route if the vehicle is awkward to access. Because this is Beta, keep a verified original read, follow Autotuner’s guidance and report anything unexpected back to them.
