Alientech has added a new KESS3 unlock protocol for the Bosch MD1CP017 ECU, opening up bench and boot access on a range of Jaguar and Land Rover diesel models built from 2021 onwards. The upgrade uses the KESS3 Unlock Module to get past the ECU’s locked state, then moves into bench mode for a full read and write.
Which ECUs
The protocol targets the Bosch MD1CP017, the ECU fitted to JLR’s 2.0 litre Ingenium diesel MHEV engines in two outputs, the D165 and D200. Access starts with a boot unlock through the KESS3 Unlock Module, after which the ECU can be worked in bench mode. Alientech has not flagged this release as beta, so it is a production ready protocol rather than an early access one.
Cars this opens up
The update covers the following Jaguar and Land Rover models fitted with the 2.0 D165 or D200 MHEV diesel, built from 2021 onwards:
- Jaguar E-Pace
- Jaguar F-Pace
- Jaguar XE
- Jaguar XF
- Land Rover Discovery Sport
- Land Rover Range Rover Evoque
- Land Rover Range Rover Velar
What it means
For owners, it means tuning files for these diesel Jaguar and Land Rover models are now a realistic option through a dealer with the right kit, something that was not on the table while the MD1CP017 stayed locked. For dealers, a bench based boot unlock takes more bench time than a straightforward OBD session, but it is a one off per vehicle rather than something that has to be repeated on every visit, and it gives a reliable route into an ECU that has been awkward to access until now. Our tools now read and write the MD1CP017 across all the Jaguar and Land Rover models above, and we can take in files from dealers running KESS3 as part of our file service.
If you run a Jaguar or Land Rover with one of these 2.0 diesel MHEV engines, build your file through our tuning builder to see what is possible for your car. Dealers already running KESS3 can send files through our file service, and anyone looking to add Alientech kit to their bench can see what we offer on our KESS3 tool page.
