AutoTuner has added full OBD read and write support for the Siemens SIMTEC71 ECU, fitted to a run of late-1990s and early-2000s Opel, Vauxhall and Subaru models built around GM’s 1.8 and 2.2-litre Ecotec engines. It is a normal-read protocol over OBD with no bench work needed, running on the ECU’s C167 (29F400) microcontroller, reading the calibration in around 12 minutes and writing back in 7, with checksum correction built in so the file goes back clean.

What it means
These are older cars, but there are plenty still on the road and plenty more sitting in garages waiting on a tool that can actually talk to them. A straightforward OBD read and write, done in under 20 minutes total with no need to get near the ECU itself, brings the SIMTEC71 back into reach for anyone running one of these Ecotec-engined classics, where sourcing a working unlock method has often been the hard part rather than the tuning itself.
For JFA’s dealers, it is one more older ECU family that no longer needs a bench job or a mail-in, which keeps turnaround quick on cars that would otherwise eat workshop time for their value. Because it is a straight OBD job, there is no need to strip anything out or send the car away, so it slots into a normal day’s bookings rather than needing to be scheduled around.
For owners of these models, it means a remap is now a same-day job rather than something that has to be chased down through a specialist. Given the age of this platform, that matters as much for keeping an older ECU serviceable as it does for performance – a readable, writable file is one less reason for a perfectly good car to be retired early.
