Car remapping explained, priced, and measured on our own dyno
A remap rewrites the software that decides how your engine performs. Done properly it is the biggest gain per pound on any turbocharged car, it is reversible, and it takes an afternoon. Put your registration in and see what your exact engine makes now, what it will make, and what it costs.

What it is
What car remapping actually does
Your engine control unit runs a map: tables of fuel, boost and ignition timing for every load and speed. The factory writes one map for the whole world, every fuel quality, every driver and every service history, so it leaves a margin. Remapping reads that file out through the diagnostic socket, recalibrates it for your engine, and writes it back. No parts, no cutting, and the original is kept.
More power and torque
Typically 15 to 30 percent more on a turbo petrol, often more on a diesel. The car pulls harder from lower revs, overtakes shorter, and tows easier.
Sharper throttle
The lazy first inch of pedal travel the factory builds in goes. The car responds when you ask, not a moment later.
Economy, driven the same
Diesels in particular often use less fuel after a remap when driven normally, because the torque is there without the pedal being buried.
Reversible
Your original file is kept. It goes back on for a sale or a warranty visit.

Stages
Stage 1, 2 or 3?
Stage 1 is software on a standard car. Stage 2 is software plus the parts that let the engine breathe. Stage 3 is a build. Most people want Stage 1 and that is where to start.
Registration and a line about the car. We come back with what it makes, what it will make and a fixed price, usually the same day.
Questions
Car remapping questions
What is car remapping?
Remapping rewrites the software in the engine control unit (ECU) that decides how much fuel, boost and ignition timing the engine gets. The manufacturer sets those conservatively for every market and every driver; a remap recalibrates them for your car, within what the engine was built to take. Nothing is bolted on and the original file is kept.
How much does car remapping cost?
A Stage 1 remap is priced per car in our calculator: put your registration in and the price for your exact engine is on screen. Stage 2 with the full parts list is from £2,650, less anything already fitted. Stage 3 is quoted per build.
How much power will a remap add?
Typically 15 to 30 percent on a turbocharged petrol and often more on a diesel, because there is more torque to release. On the cars in the table above, Stage 1 alone adds between 44 and 100 bhp. Naturally aspirated engines gain less, usually 5 to 10 percent.
Is remapping safe for my engine?
On a well-maintained engine, yes. A Stage 1 map stays inside the margins the manufacturer built in, which is why it needs no parts. We do not remap an engine with a known fault or an overdue service, and we say so first.
Does remapping affect insurance or warranty?
It can. A manufacturer warranty may not cover a fault it decides is tuning-related, and insurers expect to be told about any modification. Both are your call; we are straight about them.
Can a remap be removed?
Yes. We keep your original file and it can be written back at any time, for a sale or a warranty visit.
How long does it take?
A Stage 1 is usually done in the visit, often within a couple of hours. Stage 2 is normally two visits: parts fitted, then mapped and measured on the dyno.
Remapping near me: do I have to come to Kent?
Not always. We are in Maidstone, we run a mobile remapping service across Kent and the South East, we can post a home tuning tool for some cars, and we have 833+ JFA dealers in 24 countries who write our files.
What is the difference between remapping and chip tuning?
The same thing. Chip tuning is the older name from when the file lived on a chip that was physically swapped. Today the file is written through the diagnostic socket, so it is called remapping or ECU tuning. A tuning box is different again: a plug-in module that tricks the sensors rather than rewriting the map.
Petrol, diesel, hybrid: can they all be remapped?
Petrol turbo and diesel gain the most. Plug-in hybrids such as the BMW 330e can be remapped on the petrol side. Naturally aspirated petrols gain least. Put the registration in and the calculator tells you what your engine makes now and what it will make.
