Autotuner Adds Bosch MED17.2 Bench Read for Mini Cooper S and JCW

Autotuner now reads and writes Bosch MED17.2 (TC1796) on the bench for 2007 on Mini Cooper S, Clubman, Roadster, Coupe, Countryman and Paceman.

Autotuner has released a software update adding bench support for the Bosch MED17.2 engine ECU, built around the Infineon Tricore TC1796 processor. It covers a run of 1.6 turbo Mini models from 2007 onwards, including several John Cooper Works variants, and the supplier lists it as a Bench Normal Read mode with no OBD route for this ECU.

Which ECUs

The ECU is the Bosch MED17.2 with a TC1796 MCU. With the ECU on the bench, the tool reads the bootloader, software and calibration. Autotuner quotes a read time of about one minute and a write time of about 30 seconds, and the update includes checksum correction and automatic backup creation, so the original file is kept before any change is written back. The release is not marked as BETA. No tool version number was given in the announcement.

Because this is a bench job, the ECU has to be removed from the car and connected to the tool on the bench. That suits workshops that already handle bench work and want a quick, repeatable process for this family of Mini engines.

Cars this opens up

  • Mini Cooper S, 2007 to 2010 and later: 1.6 T, 1.6 T JCW kit, 1.6 T JCW (N14 / N18) and 1.6 T JCW GP
  • Mini Clubman, 2007 to 2010 and later: 1.6 T and 1.6 T JCW (N14 / N18)
  • Mini Roadster and Coupe, 2011 onwards: 1.6 T and 1.6 T JCW (N14)
  • Mini Countryman, 2009 onwards: 1.6 T JCW and 1.6 T JCW (N14)
  • Mini Paceman, 2013 onwards: 1.6 T JCW GP

What it means

For Mini owners, the 1.6 turbo engines in these cars respond well to a carefully written calibration. A remap typically brings a stronger, more even pull through the mid-range. A healthy car, with the basics such as spark plugs, boost hoses and the cooling system in good order, is the right starting point for any file.

For dealers and garages, the point is turnaround. A bench read that takes around a minute, with checksums corrected and a backup made automatically, means these Minis no longer need a specialist route for the original file. Send us the read and we can get a tailored file back to you quickly. If you are a private owner, you can explore the options for your car with our tuning builder. If you run a workshop, see our file service and the Autotuner tool page for what the hardware covers.

As always, check the exact engine code and ECU part number before you start, as Mini used several controller variants across the same model years.
