Autotuner has added a new OBD Normal Read protocol for the Bosch MED17.4 engine control unit, built around the TC1796 microcontroller and fitted widely across the PSA group’s 1.6 THP petrol engine. The file service can now read and write calibrations on this ECU directly over OBD, with a read time of around a minute and a quarter and a write time of roughly 30 seconds, with checksum correction handled automatically.
Which ECUs
The new protocol covers the Bosch MED17.4, as fitted to the 1.6 THP petrol engine produced between 2005 and 2018. Access is 100% OBD Normal Read, so there is no bench work, no boot procedure and no mail-in step needed to get a calibration off or back onto the car – the whole job is done through the diagnostic port.
Cars this opens up
- Peugeot: 207, 208, 308, 408, 508, 3008, 5008 and RCZ
- Citroen: C4, C4 Picasso, C4 SpaceTourer, C4 AirCross, C5, DS3, DS4, DS5
- DS Automobiles: DS 3, DS 4, DS 5
- Opel/Vauxhall: Grandland (2017)
What it means
The 1.6 THP has been one of the PSA group’s most widely used petrol engines, so an OBD-only route to it is a useful addition for any garage covering Peugeot, Citroen, DS or Opel/Vauxhall work. For owners, it means a tuning file for this engine can be fitted and road tested in one visit, without the car being stripped down for bench access.
For dealers running Autotuner, the appeal is turnaround. An OBD job needs no jig, no ECU removal and no waiting on a mail-in slot, so the same session covers the read, the write and the test drive. That also makes it easy to try a different file on the day – economy, a moderate stage 1, or a profile suited to an automatic gearbox – if the first one is not quite what the customer wanted.
Typical gains on the 1.6 THP are moderate given the engine’s size, and as always the final figure depends on the specific model, gearbox and exhaust. It is worth checking the exact production year against the list above, since the Grandland entry here is specific to the 2017 model year rather than the whole range.
