A Stage 1 remap takes the Mk8 Golf GTI from 245PS and 370Nm to around 330PS and 450Nm on standard hardware and 99 octane fuel. That is the figure from our own development car on our Mustang 4WD dyno in Maidstone. The tune goes on through the OBD port in about two hours, and the 7-speed DSG can be calibrated at the same visit so it keeps up with the extra torque.
Measured on our Mustang AWD rolling road in Maidstone. Wheel figures, drivetrain loss added for the flywheel numbers. The Mk8 Golf GTI leaves the factory at 245PS and 370Nm from the fourth-generation EA888 2.0 TSI. VW set it up to be quick and quiet, and there is a lot left in the engine. On our own development car, Stage 1 software took it to around 330PS and 450Nm on 99 octane, with no hardware changes.
How much bhp does a Mk8 GTI have?
| Power | Torque | |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 245PS (242bhp) | 370Nm |
| Stage 1 | 330PS (325bhp) | 450Nm |
| Stage 2 | Quoted for your car - see below | |
These are the figures from our development car on our Mustang 4WD dyno. Yours is measured before and after if you book a dyno session with the tune.
What Stage 1 changes
We read the ECU through the OBD port, so nothing comes apart. The calibration raises boost and the torque limits, and we spread the gain across the rev range rather than chasing one peak number. The whole job takes about two hours in our Maidstone workshop, and the original software is kept so it can go back to standard.
Tune the DSG at the same time
Most Mk8 GTIs have the 7-speed DSG. Its standard software was written around 370Nm, so once the engine makes more it starts to manage torque and soften the shifts. A gearbox calibration raises the torque limits and sharpens the shift, and it’s worth doing alongside the engine. See DSG and S tronic gearbox tuning.
Stage 2
Stage 2 adds the hardware that lets the engine breathe: an intake, turbo inlet and outlet pipes, a larger intercooler and a performance exhaust with a sports cat. A de-cat is for motorsport use only. Peak figures depend on the parts you choose and how your car runs on the dyno, so we quote Stage 2 for your car rather than publishing one number.
GTI, Clubsport or R?
- GTI (245PS) - this page.
- GTI Clubsport (300PS) - runs the larger turbo shared with the R, so it has more headroom. See Golf Mk8 R and Clubsport tuning.
- Golf R (320PS) - all-wheel drive and the same larger turbo, covered on the same page.
- Mk8.5 GTI (2024 on) - a newer car with different software. Give us your reg and we will confirm what we have for it.

Questions we get asked
How much bhp does a Stage 1 Mk8 GTI make?
Around 325bhp (330PS) and 450Nm, from a standard 242bhp (245PS) and 370Nm. That is what our development car made on our dyno.
Does the Mk8 GTI need any parts for Stage 1?
No. Stage 1 is software only. Stage 2 adds an intake, turbo pipes, a larger intercooler and an exhaust, and we quote that for your car.
Should the DSG be tuned too?
It is worth it. The standard gearbox software was written for 370Nm, so it limits torque and softens the shift once the engine makes more. Tuning it raises the limit and sharpens the shift.
Is the Clubsport the same?
No. The 300PS Clubsport has the larger turbo from the Golf R, so it goes further. It is covered on our Golf Mk8 R and Clubsport page.
Will VW be able to tell?
Yes. VAG systems store a TD1 flag against the car once a modified ECU is detected, and it stays on record. We would rather tell you that than pretend a remap is invisible.
