AutoTuner has opened up a large slice of older Ford petrol and hybrid stock through the diagnostic port alone. Continental EMS2204, EMS2205 and EMS2208 engine ECUs are now supported in 100% OBD Normal Read, which means no bench work, no opening the unit and no mail-in unlock. For a workshop, that is the difference between a car tying up a ramp for half a day and a job that is done inside the hour.
The release landed on 18 September 2026. AutoTuner quotes around two and a half minutes to read and a minute and a half to write, with checksum correction handled by the tool. Our AutoTuner tools now read and write these units over OBD, and the file service covers the calibrations that come off them.
Which ECUs
Three Continental units are covered, all reached over OBD in Normal Read mode:
- Continental EMS2204 (TC1738)
- Continental EMS2205 (TC1766)
- Continental EMS2208 (TC1767)
The readout is the calibration area rather than a full firmware dump, which is the normal arrangement for OBD work on this generation of Continental hardware. Checksums are corrected automatically on write.
Cars this opens up
- Ford B-Max (2011): 1.6 Duratec Ti-VCT
- Ford C-Max (2011): 1.6 Duratec Ti-VCT and 2.0 HEV hybrid
- Ford EcoSport (2012): 1.5 Duratec Ti-VCT and 2.0 Duratec
- Ford Fiesta (2008 to 2017): 1.6 Ti-VCT / Duratec Ti-VCT
- Ford Focus (2004 to 2011): 1.6 Ti-VCT / Duratec Ti-VCT
- Ford Mondeo (2010 to 2019): 2.0 HEV hybrid
- Lincoln MKZ (2016): 2.0 HEV hybrid
What it means
For owners, this is a group of cars that has been awkward to work on for years. The naturally aspirated 1.6 Ti-VCT petrols in the Fiesta and Focus were never headline tuning candidates, but they respond well to proper calibration work on throttle response and part-load fuelling, and the hybrid C-Max, Mondeo and MKZ have simply been out of reach for most workshops. Being able to read and write through the OBD port means the car does not need stripping and the ECU stays sealed.
For dealers, the appeal is turnaround. A four-minute read and write cycle over the diagnostic port, with no unlock step and no unit to post anywhere, is about as clean as this work gets. If you have been turning these cars away because the labour did not add up, they are now worth quoting for.
If you are an owner looking at what is possible on your car, start with our tuning builder. If you are a garage and want the files without buying the hardware, our file service covers these ECUs. If you are weighing up the tool itself, the AutoTuner tuning tool page has the detail.
