For the last few years the newest BMW and Mini engine ECUs, the Bosch DDE8 diesel and DME8 petrol families fitted from 2021, could only be tuned by sending the ECU away for a mail-in unlock. That meant the car sat in the workshop for days waiting for the post. As of mid-August 2026 all four tool suppliers we work with have released a bench solution: the ECU is unplugged, connected on the bench without being opened, read, written and refitted the same day.
Which ECUs
Bosch MD1CP032, MD1CS001, MG1CS024, MG1CS049 and MG1CS201. Between them they cover almost every BMW and Mini built since 2021: the B37 and B47 diesels in the 1.5 and 2.0 litre cars, the B46 and B48 2.0 petrols, the B58 3.0 petrol, the S58 in the M cars and the N63, S63 and N74 V8 and V12 engines.
Cars this opens up
- BMW 1 Series, 2 Series and 2 Series Gran Coupe, 3 Series, 4 Series and 4 Series Gran Coupe, 5 Series, 6 Series GT and 8 Series
- BMW X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7
- BMW M2, M3, M4, X3 M and X4 M with the S58
- Mini Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper D and SD, Clubman and Countryman, One and One D
- Alpina B3, B3 GT, B4, B4 GT, XD3 and XD4
- Toyota Supra 3.0, which uses the same B58 engine and DME8 ECU
What it means in practice
The car comes in, the ECU comes out, and it is back in the car with a Stage 1 the same day. On the 2.0 diesels a Stage 1 is worth around 40 bhp and 80 Nm; on the B58 petrol around 60 bhp and 100 Nm. On the S58 M cars we write the file to the car on our rolling road. Since 1 September there is also an OBD route on the MD1CS001 diesels once the ECU has had its first bench unlock, so a second visit for a Stage 2 or an option is a plug-in job.
Owners: put your registration into the tuning builder for your exact figures and price. Garages and tuners: the file service covers every ECU above and the tools that read them are on the tuning tools page. Stage 1 from £50, pay per file, no monthly fee.
