A Stage 1 remap takes the McLaren 720S from 720bhp and 770Nm to around 820bhp and 880Nm on our rolling road, with no hardware changes. That is a 100bhp step on a car that was already very quick, and it is available because the 4.0 twin-turbo V8 leaves the factory with real headroom. We fitted a Quicksilver exhaust to the same car, which changes the noise rather than the numbers, and it is worth being clear which does which.
Questions we get asked
How much power does a 720S gain?
Around 100bhp and 110Nm at Stage 1: 720 to roughly 820bhp and 770 to 880Nm, on standard hardware and proven on our dyno.
What does the Quicksilver exhaust add?
Noise, weight saving and appearance. On a turbocharged car an aftermarket exhaust adds very little power on its own, because the turbos are the restriction rather than the pipework behind them. Buy it for the sound, which is a perfectly good reason, not for the figures.
Is 820bhp safe on the standard engine?
On a healthy car with the file written properly and proven on the dyno, yes. We watch boost, timing, lambda and temperatures throughout and stop where the engine tells us to, rather than at a number agreed in advance.
Do you need to remove anything?
No. Stage 1 is software only, so the turbos, exhaust, catalysts and intercoolers all stay exactly as they are. Your original file is kept so the car can be returned to standard.
Will it affect the warranty?
A main dealer can detect a remap and may decline an engine or drivetrain claim as a result. Returning the car to standard before a visit is straightforward and we do it regularly.
How do I book?
Call 01622 321500 or send the registration through. Please book rather than turn up: the car needs the dyno bay for a while and we would rather give it proper attention.
