Urea warning light and emissions faults
Peugeot, Citroën and DS specialists in Maidstone

An orange UREA light, the SERVICE light, or “Emissions fault: starting impossible” on the display. Urea is what Peugeot, Citroën and DS call AdBlue, so this is an AdBlue (SCR) fault with a different label. Bring it to our Maidstone workshop: we find the part that has failed and give you a fixed price before any work starts.

Recognise it

What the UREA light means

AdBlue is a 32.5% solution of urea in purified water. The SCR system sprays it into the exhaust to cut NOx. Peugeot, Citroën and DS print UREA on the warning instead of AdBlue, but it is the same fluid, the same tank and the same system.

Steady, then out

It came on, you topped up, and it went out. That was low fluid, nothing more.

Flashing, or back again

A flashing light, or one that returns after a proper top-up, means the system has logged a fault. Topping up will not clear it.

With the engine light

UREA alongside the engine management light points to a fault in the system itself. Codes need reading.

On the display

Messages drivers see

Quote the message to us exactly as it is written. It tells us more than the light does.

“Top up emissions additive: Starting impossible in … miles”

The countdown. The car drives normally until it reaches zero, then will not restart once switched off.

“Emissions fault”

The system has found a problem it cannot clear on its own.

“Emissions fault: starting impossible”

The countdown has run out, or is about to. Book it while the car still drives.

UREA with SERVICE

Low fluid if it clears after a top-up. A fault if it does not.

Kia and Hyundai

“Check urea system” or “Service urea system”. The same AdBlue system, in their own words.

What is behind it

Common urea faults we fix

They all look the same from the driver’s seat. Reading the codes and the live SCR data is what tells them apart, which is why we diagnose before we quote.

  • Urea (AdBlue) pump - failed or blocked, so it cannot build pressure
  • Crystallised injector or lines - dried urea stops or upsets the dosing
  • Level or quality sensor - a full tank read as empty, or good fluid rejected
  • Tank heater - urea freezes in the cold, and a failed heater shows on the first frosty morning
  • Damaged tank - a cracked tank or a fault in the tank unit
  • Wiring and communication faults - a broken link between the parts and the engine ECU
  • NOx sensor - the sensor that proves the system works has failed
Models we see most

Peugeot, Citroën and DS

BlueHDi diesels from around 2014 onwards. If yours is not listed and shows a UREA warning, it is the same job.

Peugeot

208, 2008, 308, 3008, 508, Partner, Rifter

Citroën

C3, C3 Picasso, C4, C4 Cactus, C4 Picasso and Grand Picasso, Berlingo

DS

DS3, DS4

Kia and Hyundai

The same system, shown as “Check urea system” or “Service urea system”.

How it goes

What we do

Diagnostics first, then a fixed price before any work starts.

01

We find the actual fault

Codes read, live data from the urea system, and how the car behaves under load. A sensor, a heater, a pump and a blocked injector are not the same job or the same bill.

02

A fixed price, before anything happens

You are told what is wrong, what it takes to fix and what it costs. Nothing is done until you agree it.

03

Fixed, and left road legal

The system works, the UREA light clears and the countdown resets. The car keeps its emissions equipment, so it passes an MOT.

Two routes

AdBlue repair or AdBlue delete?

Two things can be done with a faulty AdBlue system, and they are not alternatives. One is for cars that go on the road. The other is not.

Road legal

AdBlue repair

We test the whole SCR system: pump, injector, heater, tank sensors, NOx sensors and the wiring between them. Then we fix what is actually wrong. The system keeps working, the warning clears, and the car stays MOT legal.

This is what we recommend for any car used on the road, and it is what most of these jobs turn out to need.

Off-road use only

AdBlue delete

Switching the system off is for private land or a vehicle being exported. It is not an option for a car you drive on the road, and it will not pass an MOT.

If the car is on the road, ask us about repair instead. We will tell you which of the two you are actually looking at.

Ask about an off-road delete →

Is AdBlue delete legal in the UK?

Not for a car used on a public road. Under regulation 61A of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 it is an offence to use a vehicle on a road once it has been modified so that it no longer meets the emissions standard it was approved to.

The same regulation sets out what is lawful: use off the road, driving the car to have the emissions equipment repaired, and driving it to a port for export. There is no motorsport or competition exemption. The lawful ground is off-road and private land, which is not the same thing.

The rules may tighten further. The Department for Transport has an open consultation on the environmental impact of in-use emissions, closing on 6 September 2026. It proposes making it an offence to modify a vehicle, or allow one to be modified, and not just to use it. It names AdBlue and SCR directly.

Questions

Urea questions

Is urea the same as AdBlue?

Yes. AdBlue is a 32.5% solution of urea in purified water. Peugeot, Citroën and DS label the warning UREA instead of AdBlue, but it is the same fluid and the same SCR system.

Why does my UREA light stay on after topping up?

Because once the system has logged a fault, the light is reporting that fault, not the level. A failed pump, a sensor, a heater or a crystallised injector all keep the light on after a top-up. If it stays on or comes back, treat it as a fault and have the codes read.

What does "starting impossible in … miles" mean?

The car starts and drives normally until the counter reaches zero, then will not restart once switched off. The counter resets when the fault is fixed, not by topping up and not by disconnecting the battery. Bring it in while it still drives.

Can I keep driving?

Usually yes in the short term, but if a countdown is running you are on a clock, and an illuminated emissions warning is an MOT failure. Driving the car to have the emissions equipment repaired is one of the lawful uses.

How much does a urea fault repair cost?

It depends on which part has failed, so we diagnose first and then give you a fixed price for the repair before any work starts. We do not guess a price over the phone.
