Volkswagen ECU remapping568 engines on file, each with its standard and Stage 1 figures.

Pick the model, then the engine, and you get what it makes as standard, what Stage 1 does to it and the parts that fit it. Or put the registration in and we find the engine for you.

What a Volkswagen remap actually does

A remap rewrites the software in your car's engine ECU. On a modern turbocharged Volkswagen that is worth around +29% on power and more again on torque, and on the strongest Volkswagen engines we hold it is as much as +147 bhp. The peak figure is the part people quote, but it is not the part you feel. What you notice on the road is torque arriving earlier, a sharper response to the throttle and a much wider band of usable power, so the car pulls where you actually drive it instead of only at the top.

We hold data for 568 Volkswagen engines across 29 models, 312 diesel and 241 petrol, each with its standard and Stage 1 figures. Put your registration in and we will show you yours rather than a range.

Every file is written for the specific engine and proven on our own Mustang AWD rolling road here in Maidstone. We keep your original file, so the car can be put back to standard at any point.

Stage 1

Software only

No hardware changes. The car keeps its standard turbo, exhaust, intercooler and catalyst, and stays road legal and MOT-ready. This is what most Volkswagen owners have, and it is where the value is.

Stage 2

Software plus hardware

A file written around parts you have fitted, usually a downpipe with a sports cat, an intercooler or an intake. The hardware on its own does very little; the gain comes from mapping around it.

Stage 3

The build

Turbo, injectors, fuelling and often internals, calibrated from scratch on the dyno. A project rather than an appointment, and we will tell you honestly whether your engine is a sensible base for one.

How we do it

Reading and writing a Volkswagen ECU

The right tool for the unit

We run Alientech, Magic Motorsport, Flashtec and bFlash. Between them they cover the Bosch and Continental ECUs used across the Volkswagen range, old and current. Which tool a car needs is decided by its ECU, not its badge.

OBD or bench

Most cars are read and written through the diagnostic port with nothing removed. Some locked or later units have to come out and go on the bench. We do bench work here rather than posting your ECU away, so it is the same visit.

Proven, not assumed

Our research and development bay holds a Mustang AWD linked dyno rated to 2000bhp. Book runs with your remap and you leave with a printed before-and-after graph for your own car.

Gearbox tuning

The gearbox has its own control unit and its own torque limiter, which can clip an engine remap. We tune DSG (DQ200, DQ250, DQ381 and DQ500): faster and firmer shifts, raised limiters, quicker response to the paddles and a manual mode that holds a gear instead of changing up on its own.

  • Your original file is kept, so the car goes back to standard whenever you want
  • Health check before we write anything, and a road test after

Questions

Volkswagen tuning, asked and answered

How much power will a Volkswagen remap add?

It depends entirely on the engine, which is why we publish the figures per engine rather than a headline number. Across the 568 engines we hold, Stage 1 is typically worth around +29% on power, and as much as +147 bhp on the strongest. A modern turbo engine gains far more than a naturally aspirated one. Put your registration in and you will get the figures for your exact car.

Is remapping a Volkswagen safe for the engine?

It is when the limits are respected. We work inside the tolerances the engine was designed with, check the car over before we write anything and road test it afterwards. What damages engines is chasing a number past what the hardware can take, or a generic file written for a different specification of the same car.

Will a remap affect my Volkswagen warranty?

A main dealer can detect a remap and may decline an engine or drivetrain claim because of it. We keep your original file and can return the car to standard before a dealer visit, and we offer an optional engine warranty on Stage 1.

How long does it take and can it be undone?

Most cars are done in about two hours through the diagnostic port, or the same day if the ECU has to come out for a bench read. It is fully reversible: we hold your original file and can write it back.

Will it use more fuel?

Usually less on a steady motorway run, because the engine is working less hard to hold the same speed. Driven harder, it will use more. The gain in economy is real but it is not the reason to do it.

Do I need to book, and where are you?
