What does the AdBlue warning light look like?
There is no standard AdBlue symbol, so it is drawn four different ways depending on who built the car. A few makes use a blue tank symbol instead, which is information rather than a warning. Find yours below.

The most common one on UK roads. It looks more like a fuel symbol than a warning, which is why it gets ignored.

Drops, waves, or a small cloud above an exhaust stream. The drawing varies between these makes but the idea is the same, and none of them writes AdBlue on it.

The word over waves
The easiest one to place, because it names itself. Some models say UREA instead of AdBlue, which is the same fluid under its chemical name.

Or no symbol at all
Plenty of cars show only words in the driver display. Read the message rather than hunting for a symbol, and quote it to us as it is written.

Either the level is low or the system has logged a fault. Worth booking in, but you are not about to be stranded.
Red
The car will start until the counter reaches zero. After that it will not start at all. Book it while it still drives.
With a spanner
A fault in the system itself, or the wrong fluid has gone in. Topping up will not clear it.
How long have you got before it will not start?
VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Cupra count down in stages, so the dashboard is already telling you how far you can still drive.

The car keeps running until the counter reaches zero. After that it will not start.
Topping up only helps if the tank is genuinely low. Where a sensor, a heater or an injector has failed, the countdown carries on after a refill, because the car still cannot prove the system is doing its job.
Three lights people mistake for the AdBlue one
All three are amber, all three sit on the same dashboard, and none of them is AdBlue. This is what each one actually looks like.
Diesel particulate filter
A canister with soot inside it and a pipe at each end. It traps soot rather than treating the gas, so it is a different part and a different job. More on DPF faults.
Glow plugs
Two loops, each with a tail curling out from the top. On a cold morning it lights for a few seconds and goes out. That is the car warming up to start, and it is normal.
Engine management
A solid engine block, usually amber but red on some cars. It covers hundreds of faults across the whole engine, so on its own it tells you very little. The stored code is what narrows it down.

Pick a symptom, or type in a fault code. Any code, not just AdBlue ones. If we hold it, you get what it means. If we do not, you still get the system it belongs to.
Start with a symptom
P20EE, P203F, P204F, P20E8, P2002 - or any other code.
This tells you what a code means, not what is wrong with your car. One code can have several causes. The cheap one and the expensive one feel identical from the driver’s seat, so we check before we quote.
Two routes
AdBlue repair or AdBlue delete?
Two things can be done with a faulty AdBlue system, and they are not alternatives. One is for cars that go on the road. The other is not.
Road legal
AdBlue repair
We test the whole SCR system: pump, injector, heater, tank sensors, NOx sensors and the wiring between them. Then we fix what is actually wrong. The system keeps working, the warning clears, and the car stays MOT legal.
This is what we recommend for any car used on the road, and it is what most of these jobs turn out to need.
Off-road use only
AdBlue delete
Switching the system off is for private land or a vehicle being exported. It is not an option for a car you drive on the road, and it will not pass an MOT.
If the car is on the road, ask us about repair instead. We will tell you which of the two you are actually looking at.
Is AdBlue delete legal in the UK?
Not for a car used on a public road. Under regulation 61A of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 it is an offence to use a vehicle on a road once it has been modified so that it no longer meets the emissions standard it was approved to.
The same regulation sets out what is lawful: use off the road, driving the car to have the emissions equipment repaired, and driving it to a port for export. There is no motorsport or competition exemption. The lawful ground is off-road and private land, which is not the same thing.
The rules may tighten further. The Department for Transport has an open consultation on the environmental impact of in-use emissions, closing on 6 September 2026. It proposes making it an offence to modify a vehicle, or allow one to be modified, and not just to use it. It names AdBlue and SCR directly.

An hour on the diagnostics
We read the codes properly, take live data from the SCR system, and watch how the car behaves under load rather than at idle. One code can mean a sensor, a heater, a pump, a wiring fault or bad fluid. Those are not the same job, or the same bill.

AdBlue questions
I topped it up and the warning light is still on. Why?
Because on most vehicles the light is not reporting the level - it is reporting a fault the system has already logged. Topping up does not clear a stored fault, and on many makes the light will only go out after the system has run a successful check, or after the fault is actually repaired and the code cleared. If it stayed on after a proper top-up, treat it as a fault rather than a fluid problem.
It says engine start prevented in X miles. What happens at zero?
Exactly what it says: the vehicle will start normally until the counter runs out, and then it will not restart once switched off. It is a legal requirement built into the emissions system, not a fault escalating. The counter does not reset on its own and it does not reset by disconnecting the battery - it resets when the fault is fixed. Do not leave it to the last few miles; get it looked at while you can still drive it to us.
Can I still drive with the AdBlue light on?
Usually yes in the short term, and the vehicle may go into a reduced-power limp mode. But an illuminated emissions warning light is an MOT failure in its own right, and if there is a countdown running you are on a clock. Driving it to a garage to have the emissions equipment repaired is explicitly one of the lawful uses.
Will disconnecting the battery reset it?
No. The countdown and the stored fault live in the engine management system, not in volatile memory, and they survive a battery disconnection. Clearing the code with a scanner without fixing the cause just means it comes back, usually quickly.
Is AdBlue delete legal?
Not for a vehicle used on a public road. Disabling the system means the vehicle no longer meets the emissions standard it was approved to, which makes using it on a road an offence under regulation 61A of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, and the warning light alone will fail an MOT. It is lawful for off-road use, private land, or a vehicle being exported. If the vehicle is road-going, repair is the answer - and a Department for Transport consultation closing on 6 September 2026 proposes making the modification itself an offence, not just the use of it.
How much does an AdBlue delete or removal cost?
For a vehicle used on the road, the honest answer is that it is not the job you want priced. An ad blue delete makes it an offence to drive and it fails the MOT, so we quote repair instead. We price that from the car: an hour of diagnostics first, then a fixed price for the part that has actually failed, before any work starts. For genuine off-road or export use, ask and we will quote the removal.
What does the diagnostic hour actually involve?
Reading and interpreting the stored codes, live data from the SCR system, and checking behaviour under load rather than at idle. The point is to separate the cheap cause from the expensive one, because a level sensor and a failed pump can present identically from the driver's seat.

Does a remap or a fault affect my warranty?
Repairing a faulty emissions system is a repair, not a modification, and keeps the vehicle to its original specification. Modifications are a different question - our warranty page sets out where you actually stand.
