The F90 M5 makes 600hp and 750Nm as standard, or 625hp in Competition form, from the 4.4 litre twin-turbo S63 V8. Our Stage 1 calibration takes either version to around 710hp and 1050Nm, programmed through the OBD port with no hardware changes, and the original file is kept so the car can be returned to standard at any time. Stage 2 adds downpipes and intake work for those who want more, and the gearbox can be recalibrated for faster shifts to match.
Questions we get asked
Does the M5 F90 need any hardware for Stage 1?
No. Stage 1 is a software-only calibration of the standard ECU. The S63 engine and the M xDrive driveline have plenty of margin for this level, which is why the gain is so large from a remap alone.
Is the M5 Competition tuned differently from the standard M5?
The Competition starts at 625hp rather than 600hp but uses the same engine and ECU, and both end up at around the same tuned figures. The calibration is written for your car's file, so the starting point makes no difference to the process.
Can the gearbox be tuned as well?
Yes. The eight-speed M Steptronic has its own control unit which we can recalibrate for quicker shift times, sharper paddle response and revised torque limits so the box makes full use of the extra output.
