A Stage 1 remap takes the F82 BMW M4 from 431bhp and 550Nm to around 510bhp and 720Nm, and the 450bhp Competition finishes in the same place. The G82 Competition goes from 510bhp to around 600bhp and 760Nm. On the F8x cars the seven speed DCT is the part most owners overlook, because it holds a torque ceiling of its own and softens the shift once the engine passes it. Our separate M3 page covers the saloon and the G80 in more detail.

BMW M3 & M4 ECU Remapping, Engine Tuning & Gearbox Tuning

The M3 and M4 are among the most rewarding cars we tune, and among the most commonly misquoted. Which generation you have matters more than anything else, because the S55 and S58 engines respond differently, and the figures thrown around online usually belong to a different car from yours.

F80 M3 and F82 M4 (2014 to 2020)

The S55 arrived at 431bhp in standard form, 450bhp as a Competition and 460bhp in CS trim. Our Stage 1 software takes all three to around 510bhp and 720Nm.

That is worth pausing on. The Competition does not finish higher than the standard car, it simply starts higher. If you are paying a premium for one on the strength of its tuning potential, you are paying for a smaller gain rather than a bigger result. The GTS is a different specification again, and we cover that separately on our GTS software page.

G80 M3 and G82 M4 (2021 on)

The S58 starts at 480bhp, or 510bhp as a Competition. Stage 1 takes the Competition to around 600bhp and 760Nm. If you have the standard 480bhp car, ask us for the current figure for yours rather than assuming it matches the Competition.

Gearbox tuning

Both generations benefit from work on the transmission alongside the engine. We revise shift speed, shift points and clamping pressure, and release the torque limiters that would otherwise cap what the engine map is able to deliver. On a car making this much torque that is not a cosmetic extra, it is what keeps the drivetrain behaving as it should.

How we do it

Every car is mapped and then verified on our own 2000bhp Mustang 4WD linked dyno at our workshop in Maidstone, Kent. Send us your registration and we will confirm exactly which engine and ECU you have, and what is realistic for it, before you commit to anything.

If you aren’t sure whether to get your own M3 or M4 remapped with us, give us a call or send us an email and we can discuss how to take your car to the next level.

Questions we get asked

How much power does a Stage 1 F82 M4 make?

Around 510bhp and 720Nm from a standard 431bhp, and the 450bhp Competition reaches the same figure. The S55 responds well because the standard boost target is conservative.

What about the G82?

The 510bhp Competition goes to around 600bhp and 760Nm on standard hardware. We quote the Competition figure because our own records for the 480bhp standard car vary more than we are willing to publish as a single number.

Does the gearbox need tuning as well?

On the F8x the DCT has its own torque ceiling and pulls back shift pressure above it. On the G8x the ZF eight speed behaves the same way. Tuning the box is what keeps the shift crisp after a remap.

Is a remap detectable?

Yes. BMW logs ECU programming activity and a dealer can see the module has been written to. We say so up front rather than after the fact.
