Every 1.4 T-Jet Abarth uses the same engine, and the badge on the back tells you which software Fiat put on it rather than what is underneath. A Stage 1 remap takes the 135, 140, 145 and 160hp cars to around 170bhp and 290Nm, and the 165, 180 and 190hp cars to around 195bhp and 320Nm. So the cheapest 595 ends up where a much dearer one started, which is the single most useful thing to know when you are buying one.

The new 500 has been a massive success for Fiat, so has the bigger boned version of the model from Abarth – a Fiat subsidiary offering selected high-performance versions of the Fiat brand.
Sporting the distinctive scorpion badges, the Abarth 500 has been significantly re-engineered with a bigger turbo and injectors and is only available through the small network of Abarth dealerships. Thanks to a peppy 1.4-litre turbo charged petrol engine, it performs as well as its striking looks suggest. Sharp steering and minimal body roll make it hugely fun too.

Questions we get asked
How much power does an Abarth 595 remap give?
The 135, 140, 145 and 160hp versions all reach around 170bhp and 290Nm. The 165, 180 and 190hp versions reach around 195bhp and 320Nm. They are the same 1.4 T-Jet in different states of tune, which is why they converge.
Is the base 595 worth buying if I am going to tune it?
It is usually the smart buy. A 135hp car remapped ends up around 170bhp, which is where a far more expensive 165 or 180hp version starts. You are paying for trim and badging on the dearer cars, not for a different engine.
What about Stage 2 and Stage 3?
Stage 2 adds hardware such as an induction kit and a decat or sports cat downpipe with a file written around it. Stage 3 is our own JFA260 turbo conversion, which takes a standard 135bhp car to 260bhp on stock internals. We have written that up separately.
Is the T-Jet reliable when tuned?
It stands up well at Stage 1 on a healthy car. What matters is condition: these are small, hard-worked turbo engines and we check the servicing, the plugs and the boost hoses before writing anything.
Do you tune the Fiat 500 Abarth as well?
Yes, and the Abarth 124 Spider, which uses a different 1.4 MultiAir engine and reaches around 200bhp. Same workshop, different figures, so tell us exactly which car you have.
How long does it take?
About two hours through the diagnostic port including a road test, and your original file is kept so it can be put back to standard whenever you want.
