Not every release is about the newest locked ECU. Three Autotuner protocols over the summer put a run of well loved older BMWs and Minis onto a plain OBD read and write, no bench, no unlock.
M3 E46, M5 E39, Z8 and Z4 M (Siemens MSS52 and MSS54)
The S54 and S62 cars, 1998 to 2008: read in two and a half minutes, write in a little over two. On a naturally aspirated M engine a calibration is about throttle maps, ignition, the rev limiter and the speed limiter rather than big power numbers, and it is worth doing when a decat or an intake goes on.
E46, E39 and Z3 six-cylinders (Siemens MS42)
The M52TU 320i, 323i, 328i, 520i to 528i, 728i and Z3 2.0 to 2.8 (1995 to 2000). A useful protocol for a car that has had an exhaust and needs the fuelling and the lambda logic adjusted.
Mini Cooper S, JCW and BMW 28i (Bosch MEVD17.2)
The 2007 to 2014 Mini range on the N14 and N18 turbo engines (Hatch R56, Clubman, Convertible, Coupe, Roadster, Countryman, Paceman) and the BMW N20 2.0 turbo in the 2009 to 2014 228i, 328i, 428i, 528i, X3, X4 and X6 28i. These are turbo engines that respond properly: the 184 PS Cooper S typically makes around 220 PS and 320 Nm on a Stage 1, the 245 PS N20 around 290 PS and 400 Nm. Both are over OBD, with the first write taking up to eleven minutes for the unlock and every one after that about two.
